A new edition of ISO 9001, the world’s most widely used quality management system standard, is being submitted for voting as a Final Draft International Standard and, subject to formal approval by the ISO membership, the publication of the revised version should be in the October-November 2008 time frame.

ISO’s rules for the development of standards require their periodic review to decide if they need revising, maintaining or withdrawing. Compared to the 2000 revision, ISO 9001:2008 represents fine-tuning, rather than a thorough overhaul. It introduces clarifications to the requirements existing in ISO 9001:2000, based on user experience over the last eight years, and changes that are intended to improve further compatibility with the ISO 14001:2004 standard for environmental management systems.

We will notify all our clients once the new version is released.

Since the re-write of ISO 9001 in 2000, ISO officials have been monitoring its implementation around the globe. Many companies have praised the change from the element to process approach, citing improved ease of integration with their current business processes. While more than 80% of companies worldwide indicate that they are satisfied with the changes made to ISO 9001, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) continues to monitor suggestions for improving the standard.

The version 2008 is under development in the ISO TC 176. The work is dedicated to the revision of ISO 9000, aimed for 2008. This work aims to give solutions to the lack of confidence in ISO 9001: 2000 standard and certification. The new Quality Management System (QMS) aims to address the concerns of the most advanced enterprises for “Business Excellence”. It will include, beyond the customer satisfaction that is the basis of the ISO 9001: 2000 standard, the dimension of “sustainable growth based on learning and innovation”. The tabled drafts come from official documents published by the Japanese Ministry of the Economy Trade and Industry. They are based on a survey of 520 Japanese companies and of 10 excellent overseas companies. Obviously the needs of the large and most advanced companies have been taken into account.

The degree of “Business Excellence” will be evaluated at five levels of maturity of which the ISO 9001 certification will be level 2. Three new levels of excellence above ISO 9001 are introduced.

Another planned feature of the new QMS is the correction of the excesses of “a certain number of certification bodies, which acted without integrity”. This problem of the existing system has been heavily criticised and it will be corrected through promised changes in the accreditation / certification system.

Several indications have been outlined at those meetings. The majority of them refer to the objective of reaching a better understanding of all the different points already present in the current regulation version, instead of introducing new additional ones.

The main objective is to avoid discrepancies between declaration and reality. Some companies justify the difference by the existence of exclusions.
